There is a growing awareness that plants and planting is not merely visual amenity or an accessory but is absolutely integral to support our way of living. Many Garden Centres use buildings which do not lend themselves to the optimum display of plants. Too often plants are banished to spaces at the back of the shop where they are displayed in much the same manner as hard goods in a DIY store or tinned food in supermarkets. From this realisation that plants are a key component of our life support system and a positive food source in our cities comes the idea to create a garden centre form and layout which gives more than lip service to the overwhelming importance of plants as the Garden Centre's raison d' être.

Following on also from our Circular Plantaria designs for Hayes Garden World in the Lake District, we have given priority to the design of a building that fits into the landscape and can integrate seamlessly with it. The circular geodesic dome structure is "rooted" into the landscape in terms of the grass and wild flower banks that form the walls to the structure. At the entrance the customer sees large photographic murals on the frontage of the building and follows planting from the car park and pedestrian areas through the building and out into the open sales area beyond. There is no separation between natural landscape and garden retailing.
