A retail nursery in North Yorkshire has invested £500,000 in improving its retail offering having been given the go-ahead to expand by planning officers.

Garden Centre speialists Malcolm Scott Consultants prepared a site development plan and obtained detailed planning consent on behalf of Whitegates Nursery in Northallerton for a 868 sq m extension to its retail space and coffee shop.

Pouring investment into the site has paid off

Work on the £500,000 extension completed in time for it to open ahead of this year’s heatwave.

Chris Primett, of Malcolm Scott Consultants, added: “Whitegates is located in a rural area whre retail development is not normally permitted. The retail nursery had, however, run out of retail space due to its successful growth over the past five years. Jon recognised the potential to invest in and develop his business to attract more customers.

“We were delighted to get the green light to push ahead with his vision. The completed extension is going to make Whitegates one of the best centres in North Yorkshire.”

Jon Grainge, owner of the nursery, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to the new and improved offering, especially with the incredible weather we’ve been enjoying in recent weeks.

“This represented a significant investment for us and it was important that we got it right. Chris and the team were excellent at helping us identify the best way to improve the centre, and in securing the go-ahead for us to realise our aims.

“We’re delighted with the resulting footfall, and plan to liaise further with the team to identify further ways to develop the site and build on its success.”
